The Crooked Beat ” Same ”

A welcomed addition to the growing stable of competent Swedish ska band. This band, probably most famous for acting as Judge Dread’s backing band during his Swedish tour, have teamed up with long-running Swedish fanzine A Message To You to release a reggae-flavoured 5-song EP. Sure the ska is there (like in the opening track ”March of the Crooked” and ”New Complexion”) but the focus is more on the mellower styles of rocksteady and reggae, and unlike many others they do it with style. Clean production and catchy horns make up this solid release from a band deserving your attention. (One Step Beyond Nr 6)

Swedish the Crooked Beat is much to my surprise very pleasant listening. Professional players play a smooth crossover between 2-tone ska and the 60s stuff. My favourite songs are ”March of the Crooked” and ”New Complexion”. There are only two things I need to complain: sometimes singer’s voice is a bit bothering and the last song is a way too long. Otherwise, like the press release titles, the best Swedish ska record on the markets. Waiting for the next one! (Banana Nr2)

Dansanta March of the crooked och New complexion tar nappatag med sköna, avslappnade Devil mouth. Nr 1)

Long established Swedish skazine A Message To You brings this five track EP to you on their label A.M.T.Y Records. Swedish ska/reggae group The Crooked Beat formed in 1996, in Sundbyberg outside Stockholm. An eight-piece band who’s members played in various bands ranging from reggae and afro to soul, jazz and blues which you can trace in their music. Outstanding tracks on this release are ”March Of The Crooked” and ”New Complexion”. Incredible stuff from this fabulous band. Well done, A Message To You and The Crooked Beat (full marks to you all). Long life to the label as of that of the skazine. (Ska-Line)

Long running Swedish skazine A Message To You have launched their own label AMTY Records with the excellent debut five song CD EP from The Crooked Beat. The Crooked Beat hails from the Stockholm suburb of Sundbyberg and plays a very stylish brand of authentic ska, highlighted by strong vocals and a punchy brass section. Their eight piece line up gigs regularly in and around Stockholm and last year they provided backing for the late great Judge Dread on his final Swedish tour. (Do The Dog Nr 14)

Recension:
SWT (Swe Tone Ska)
The Crooked Beat – The Crooked Beat (CDM A.M.T.Y)
4/5
A Message To You¹s samarbete äntligen
Plattan inleds nästan självklart instrumentalt med låten March Of The
Crooked.
trombon ekvilibristen Ricos verk.
absoluta svenska Ska eliten.
